Eli Manning’s memorabilia fraud trial delayed

The trial over a lawsuit accusing quarterback Eli Manning of participating in a fraudulent scam to sell memorabilia will have to wait.

Originally, the trial was set to begin Sept. 25, but it has been pushed back, Newsday reported. The new date has not been announced and a reason for the delay was not given.

Manning is being sued by three collectors in New Jersey who claim Manning allowed his memorabilia to be sold as game used, even though it wasn’t.

He was scheduled to give a deposition June 28, but the delay in the trial means he will have to meet with the court from Aug.1-Sept. 30. With minicamps, the preseason and the start of the regular season during that timeframe, Manning will need to figure out how and when he can meet with the court to give the deposition.

Manning has maintained his innocence, as has the Giants organization.

In general, this crop is shaping up to be weaker than the 2017 draft class, but stronger than the 2016 one. The top of the draft could feature slightly more upside, but the strength is not there yet in mid-draft depth 鈥?largely due to the fact that the 2017 high school recruiting class is worse overall than the 2016 group. No matter, though, there will be plenty of options at the top to choose from.

But beyond that, things do seem to be more wide open than most. College basketball’s talent overall will be down in 2018, making for what could be something of a chaotic process with a lot of risers and fallers throughout the year. Here are the names I’m starting with that you should know.

Porter is the prize, having taken a large leap from his junior to senior year of high school. He’s a smooth scorer at 6-10 with fluid athleticism and the ability to knock it down from deep. He’s a prototypical stretch-4 in the modern NBA, but he can do way more than that.

Dwight Howard traded from Hawks to Hornets

Charlotte is getting a second Superman.

Eight-time NBA All-Star Dwight Howard has been traded by the Hawks to the Hornets, along with the 31st overall pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, in exchange for center Miles Plumlee, swing player Marco Belinelli and the 41st overall pick, the teams announced late Tuesday.

ESPN and The Vertical were the first to report the deal.

Rose, who becomes a free agent July 1, was paid $21.3 million last year. At one point during the regular season, there were reports that he would seek a max contract as he built a strong season on a weak team: He played in more than 60 games for the second consecutive year, despite the knee problem, and averaged 18.1 points, his most since 2011-12.

Now, it appears he’s softening on what it would take to sign him.

“In the end, we want to explore everything — if you’re going to compete, you clearly need a number of [top] players, so let’s figure that out,” Armstrong said. “We want the best team possible. That’s it. All the other stuff, if the team wins, everyone wins.”

That’s where the disconnect hits. Clearly, the Knicks are in disarray. Phil Jackson is trying to trade Carmelo Anthony to build around Kristaps Porzingis, who has made his unhappiness very public.

Keeping a shoot-first, ball-dominating guard to run the triangle offense on a retooling team looks like a bad fit. Maybe that’s why most mock drafts have the Knicks taking a guard such as Malik Monk or Dennis Smith, maybe even French point guard Frank Ntilikina.

In short, it may not matter if Rose wants to be a Knick at a smaller price tag.redskins_085

NBA Finals 2017: Kevin Durant leads Warriors in blowout Game 1 win over Cavaliers

Game Colton Schmidt Jersey Only Game 7 of last year’s NBA Finals was decided by single digits. Game 1 of this year’s Finals was another blowout.
Game Derek Watt Jersey
Most often the debate is geared toward James or Michael Jordan, but lately there’s been some debate as to whether the Cavs star has even passed Kobe Bryant. Barkley said James might pass the Lakers legend if he beats the Warriors this year, and on Wednesday, Scottie Pippen said on ESPN, I don’t think he’s surpassed Kobe at all.

The longtime Jordan teammate then expanded his thoughts by saying it’s an unfair comparison in the first place.

James appeared to be fine in Game 4, even though it wasn’t quite his best game, it was still the second-best performance of the night behind only Kyrie Irving. But the thought he could have been sick in Game 3 would explain why his stats look so much different from everything else he’s done this postseason.

And as Jefferson said, don’t expect James to talk about it on his own. He’s the type of athlete who would say there are no excuses, and he needs to get better. He said as much Tuesday before the game by saying, I’m focused on the present, not the past. There’s also a chance he didn’t want to deal with the comparison to Michael Jordan’s flu game.

The Cavs are now one win away from a third-straight appearance in the NBA Finals against the Warriors.

NBA free agency: Kevin Durant will reportedly decline option, re-sign with Warriors

Limited Brayden Schenn Jersey Kevin Durant will be with the Warriors for at least another year.

The NBA Finals MVP will decline his player option for the 2017-18 season and re-sign with Golden State, ESPN.com reported Monday, citing league sources.

Durant will officially become an unrestricted free agent starting July 1, but he is expected to stay with the Warriors on a one-year contract with a one-year player option, with the possibility for a long-term deal next summer, the report said.

As a result, Durant will turn down $28 million that comes with the player option and make about $4 million less next season, mostly so Golden State can use that money to retain Andre Iguodala.

Limited Steve Francis Jersey A powerful reserve, Iguodala was expected to become a potential free agent this summer, along with several other players. Now that Durant is freeing up some cap space, the Warriors are expected to retain much of their current roster.

Lowdown: This series featured legendary battles between Elgin Baylor and Bob Pettit. Minneapolis won the first series behind 28.3 points per game from Baylor. Pettit averaged 26.4 points and 16.7 rebounds for the Hawks the following year. St. Louis won the rubber match against the Lakers, relocated to Los Angeles, in a thrilling 105-103 victory in Game 7. The winner of this series, however, lost to the Celtics in the NBA Finals all three seasons.

Lowdown: Walt Frazier averaged 24.0 points per game in the 1971-72 series, which the Knicks took in five games before losing to the Lakers in the NBA Finals. The series went to seven games the following year, and Frazier scored 25 points in a 94-78 victory in the decisive Game 7. The Knicks won the NBA Finals that year, but the Celtics returned the favor by beating New York in five games in 1973-74. John Havlicek averaged 29.6 points per game in the series.

The Falcons showed no mercy in the third quarter.

Manning and his wife also founded the Eli and Abby Manning Children’s Clinics in 2007, kicking off a five-year fundraising campaign that raised close to $3 million. Building on that accomplishment and model, they also established the University of Mississippi Medical Center Manning Family Fund, which raised nearly $1.5 million in it’s first year.

A two-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Super Bowl MVP, the top pick in the 2004 draft has spent the entirety of his 13-year NFL career with the Giants. He holds numerous team records, including passing touchdowns, pass completions and passing yards, and also currently has 199 consecutive regular-season starts, most among active players.

After watching his mother tackle and survive breast cancer, Olsen founded Receptions for Research: The Greg Olsen Foundation. His mission through the foundation is to ensure that everyone has a second chance at life, like his mother. The foundation’s Receiving Hope program focuses on cancer research, support and education programming. The program has distributed over $520,000 to six hospitals and foundations since 2009.

The Falcons showed no mercy in the third quarter. A Devonta Freeman touchdown catch, which upon replay review was reversed from it’s initial spot at the 1-yard line, padded the Atlanta lead, ended a drive that took an important 5:08 off the clock and answered Green Bay’s score in devastating fashion. Matt Bryant missed the PAT, but nobody cared with the game so out of hand. 37-7, Falcons.

The score the Packers desperately needed came about five possessions too late. Green Bay finally found the end zone with a two-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams, a score that capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive early in the third quarter. 31-7, Falcons.

Trump comparing speech to Peyton Manning’s Super Bowl win raises excellent questions

Game Julian Howsare Jersey There were countless comments from President Donald Trump’s interview with ABC News on Wednesday that made us question the reality of our existence.

A few particularly odd ones involved him celebrating his recent speech to the CIA, and from those, we can painfully extract some relation to sports. That’s because President Trump called the reaction to this speech the biggest standing ovation since Peyton Manning had won the Super Bowl, and they (Fox) said it was equal.

This brings to mind so many questions, not only, Why is the president of the United States speaking like a third-grader who just got praised for a diorama?
Game Alec Ogletree Jersey
First off, where is this standing ovation metric coming from Does it evaluate size of the crowd or length of the standing Maybe volume of the clapping Neither Pro Football Reference.com nor the NFL Record Book has any sort of Super Bowl standing ovation ranking. But this seems like an important new statistic, so please explain, Fox.

But based on Senior Bowl practice film of the first two days, Peterman’s performance has made him look even better than advertised. Through two days, combining his work in seven-on-seven drills (of which there are no lineman involved) and full team drills, Peterman has gone 16 of 19 with one throwaway, and 2 of 3 on passes 15 or more yards.

More impressive, Peterman has made ideal play progressions and decisions on 17 of 19 throws, with just one truly incorrect read. Keep in mind this is Peterman’s first time in the Bears’ offense with entirely new receivers. Showcasing poise in reading the field and timing with receivers are the toughest hurdles for quarterback prospects in an all-star game setting.

Wes Welker reunites with Bill O’Brien as Texans assistant coach

Wes Welker can add full-time coach to his resume.

The former NFL wide receiver was hired by the Texans as an offensive/special teams assistant coach, the team announced Monday.
That’s a huge pickup, I think, Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus said. Just have to his knowledge on the team, just to have somebody who played the game for so long, just to be able to teach the guys exactly what he saw out there so that they can pretty much mimic exactly their skill set as they play out on the field.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien has worked with Welker before, when O’Brien coached Welker with the Patriots.

Limited Kids Allen Robinson Jersey Welker was a guest coach for the Dolphins and Ravens this past season, but only for their organized team activities.

He ended his playing career in 2015 after 12 years in the NFL.

According to the Inquirer, Eagles PR coordinator Zach Groen told reporters that they were speaking too loudly while debating a penalty in the third quarter. McLane and other reporters replied the Eagles say he told Groen to shut up, but he denies it. He thought the back-and-forth was over before Eagles security came and removed him.

Limited Kids Martin Brodeur Jersey While speaking about Ryan’s sudden unemployment, Cowher laid the smackdown on the former Jets coach. Instead of tempering expectations for a club that’s missed the post-season for 17 years, the big-talking Ryan promised results he didn’t deliver. Instead of trying to build a culture in Buffalo, Ryan focused on himself.
I don’t see him coaching again in the National Football League as a head coach, Cowher said.

it doesn’t seem to be that simple.

Usually, when faced with a prolonged stretch of bad play, professional athletes, baseball players in particular, have tried-and-true methods to get back on track. A hitter might focus on getting his foot down earlier at the plate to clear up any timing issues. A pitcher might harp on bending his back to get his pitches down in the zone to avoid solid contact.

Merril Hoge Elite Jersey Whatever the ailment, there are usually remedies a player can utilize to bust out of their funk. Unfortunately for Cole, it doesn’t seem to be that simple.

While Sale finally an elusive win, St. Louis starting pitcher Carlos Martinez fulfilled a life-long dream. Martinez tossed nine innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits and striking out 11 to help the Cardinals to a 7-0 win over the Phillies.

Oh my god, it’s so exciting, because it’s my dream, he said after the game. I was hoping for a long time to throw like that.

Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain had a great night with two home runs in San Diego. Cain was 3 for 5 with five RBIs in a 12-6 victory. It was the fourth multi-homer game of Cain’s career.

Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman was lit up by the Yankees, surrendering nine runs off three homers in just 1 1/3 innings of work. The Yankees went on for a 16-3 victory and it was the first time since June 21, 2015 that Tillman had failed to get more than four outs in a game.

Brewers (33-30) at Diamondbacks (38-26), 4:10 p.m. ET — Chase Anderson wasn’t bad with the Diamondbacks. He had passable ERAs in his first two seasons in the majors with the club but still found himself a member of the Brewers two years after making it to the majors. Now he has his fourth career start against his former squad and has a great pitching matchup with Robbie Ray on tap. Ray (6-3, 2.85 ERA) and Anderson (5-1, 2.94) are fifth and eighth respectively in ERA in the National League. Ray is sixth in the league in strikeouts with 95.

I’d love to play for the Browns

Their best description of a No. 1 back, LeGarrette Blount, had a rough game, with 11 carries for 31 yards and a critical lost fumble. Their mismatch-creating quick scatback, Dion Lewis, was slowed down by the Falcons’ fast defense.

Enter White to dominate the game in the second half. He caught 14 of his 16 targets for 110 yards and a TD. He also was the Pats’ most effective rusher, with six carries for 29 yards and two more TDs — the 1-yard game-tying score and the 2-yard walkoff.

White didn’t know if he was going to be playing every snap or no snaps, but in typical Patriots fashion, he played all the right snaps.

“I had an idea, but at the same time, you never know how the game is going to go,” he said. “I just wanted to be a viable option for my team whenever the ball came my way, blocking, running. I just wanted to do whatever it took to get a victory. It’s the Super Bowl — you have to lay it all on the line.”

“I don’t mind where I play at all,” Garrett said. “I just want to go No. 1 and be the best player in the draft and the best in the league for years to come. It doesn’t matter who I’m with.

“I’d love to play for the Browns. I’d love to play for anybody who picks me No. 1. But my goal is just to go No. 1 and have a successful career.”

There’s a good chance Garrett will soon achieve the former. Even though the Browns need a starting quarterback, it appears likely that top prospects like Clemson’s Deshaun Watson or North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky will be considered too big a risk for such an investment.

The Browns also are in need of pass-rush help as the team shifts to a 4-3 system under new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Cleveland finished tied for 30th in the NFL last season with 26 sacks.texans_042

NFL franchise tag candidates for 2017: Key free agents holding collective breath

It took a while for Shanahan to reach this level of play-calling swagger. Houston was an OK offensive coordinating start, and Washington brought only brief, zone-read fun with Robert Griffin III. Then came the humbling time with Cleveland in 2014, lowlighted by the Johnny Manziel mess.

Atlanta presented Shanahan a big early challenge, too, in 2015, as Ryan and the rest of the holdover personnel struggled to grasp his complicated concepts at first. But with more time, better health and improved personnel, the Falcons’ offense became this season’s juggernaut and stamped Shanahan’s readiness as a head coach.

Austin Rivers Game Jersey “Nothing has changed in what’s he’s been doing to create a high-powered offense,” said Falcons wide receiver Taylor Gabriel, who also worked under Shanahan with the Browns. “His personality out there, he’s a very high-octane dude. He’s very intense on the details of everything. He wants everything perfect.”
Jamon Brown Game Jersey
For his likely next stop with the 49ers, Shanahan will bring the offensive acumen and intensity of Chip Kelly, only with a more proven track record of NFL success. After busting with the Browns and flying with the Falcons, Shanahan also knows his ability as a coach and play-caller means nothing without a trusted franchise QB.

The opening of the two-week window in which a team can designate one upcoming free agent a franchise player comes Feb. 15.

Once the franchise tag is applied, the player immediately will be tendered a one-year, fully guaranteed contract that’s usually worth less than the amount of money he would receive with a long-term contract.

The application of the franchise tag also effectively blocks the player from free agency by attaching a cost of two first-round draft picks for any contract the player signs with another team.

So who will get tagged this year? Here are some likely candidates.
